THE BLACK-RUMPED WAXBILL (Estrilda troglodytes) by Ian Hinze. Description, voice, distribution, status, introduced distribution, habitat, general behaviour and feeding, courtship display, nesting, captive observations, are all covered by waxbill specialist Ian Hinze.

PARENT REARED AFRICAN JACANA (Actophilornis africana) AT DISNEY`S ANIMAL KINGDOM by Susan Congdon. Having hand reared 13 chicks from the only wild-caught pair breeding in the USA, and found that they were showing signs of imprinting, staff at DAK, Florida, decided to risk leaving the eggs with the parents. The male lost some of the chicks when he flew over the pond to join the female, while attempting to carry the chicks under his wings as he did so. To prevent this happening again, the male and chicks were moved to the off-exhibit Avian Research Centre.

HOW DO TWO STURNIDS, (Leucopsar rothschildi and Gracupica nigricollis ), GET ALONG TOGETHER IN A LIMITED SPACE? by Walter A Sontag, Jr. This study addressed the question if and what type of correlation may exist between the Bali Starling and closely related Black-collared species when sharing the same aviary ? In addition, the phylogenetic relations of both species and their allies are discussed including parasitological findings. Different bobbing and nodding displays occur in the group and those of some species are characterised. There is what is probably the first photo of a Vinous-breasted Starling "nodding" and a Black-collared Starling shown in its "bowing" position.

BREEDING THE SCARLET IBIS (Eudocimus ruber)AT BELO HORIZONTE ZOO, MINAS GERAIS, BRAZIL by Cristiano Schetini de Azevedo, Angela Bernadete Fagioli & Joao Bosco Ferraz. Colour photos of a nest with two eggs, and a chick and unhatched egg, illustrate this account of the first breeding of this ibis at this zoo. Other breedings in Brazillian collections are referred to.

FOURTEENTH HARPY EAGLE CHICK AT NUREMBERG ZOO. Chris Brack`s remarkable photo ( one of two ) shows keeper Martin Geisendorfer feeding the chick in the nest while its foster mother, hatched at the zoo in 1992, looks on. Eagles bred at Nuremberg have been sent to several other collections, these are listed together with other collections known to breed or to have bred this fearsome raptor.

BREEDING THE YELLOW BREASTED MAGPIE (Cissa hypoleuca) by Neil Owen. A description of what was probably the first breeding of this species in the UK. It is thought that the birds belong to the subspecies C. h. jini, described as: "relatively longer-tailed and greener below than other races." Colour photos show one of the adults, a chick at 18 days and at one month.

AVICULTURAL SOCIETY TO HELP FUND FURTHER RESEARCH. A report on the decision to help fund research on the Yellow-throated Laughingthrush (G. galbanus) in China.

SUCCESSFUL SCANDINAVIAN SYMPOSIUM. A brief report on the Omei Shan Liocichla Symposium attended by keepers from Denmark and Sweden, at Copenhagen Zoo.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. Derek Goodwin expresses his fears that the introduced Mandarin Duck, Golden and Lady Amhersts Pheasants could be declared unwanted "aliens" and eradicated from Britain, following government plans to eradicate the Ruddy Duck, plans he vehemently opposes. He contrasts this with the enthusiasm shown for the reintroduced White-tailed Sea Eagle, Red Kite and Goshawk, and annual release of huge numbers of Common Pheasants by shooting interests.
