THREATS TO PARROTS IN AVICULTURE by Rosemary Low. Rosemary is concerned that many species will disappear from aviculture unless present stocks are properly managed. She feels strongly that responsible aviculturists should ensure hand-reared rare parrots are suitable for breeding and are placed in breeding situations, and appeals to all parrot breeders to share their knowledge, preferably in the form of the written word.
THE MANDARIN DUCK by Philip Scofield
Philip writes at length and with authority about this popular and exotically plumaged Oriental duck. He got his first Mandarins in 1971 and has bred small numbers most years since then.
SCARLET IBIS INCUBATE SACRED IBIS EGGS AND PARTLY REAR A SACRED IBIS CHICK by Brett K. Banner. In August 1992, Hurricane Andrew struck Metrozoo, Miami, destroying the walk-through aviary and liberating over 200 birds- These included five Sacred Ibis: one disappeared, three males were recaptured and one female remained free within the zoo- In 1995 and 1996, she mated with one of the recaptured males, nested and raised chicks with him. The following year, however, she laid her eggs in the nests of Scarlet Ibis which hatched one of her eggs and partly reared the chick, until it was thought prudent to remove it and hand-rear it.
NOTES ON THE FEEDING AND NESTING OF OLIVE PIGEONS by Neville Brickell. These concentrate mainly on the feeding and nesting behaviour, both in the wild and in captivity, of the African Olive Pigeon The notes are illustrated by a full-page colour photo of an adult and a colour photo of a nestling in an aviary in South Africa.
VON DBR DECKEN'S HORNBILL Tockus deckeni AT THE OKLAHOMA CITY ZOOLOGICAL PARK by Chris Smith. By installing a camera in the nest-box, keepers were able to record the exact date each egg was laid, the precise incubation period and other details. The account is illustrated with colour photos of the pair, which to date had produced 17 young.
