It turned out to be a perfect afternoon. Seventy plus guests gathered at Birdworld Bird Park for the Avicultural Society Garden Party. Guests wandered through the gardens, enjoying the bird exhibits, the free flying bird show, penguin feeds and meeting each other. Many visitors met up with bird friends they had not seen for, in some cases, years.
The marquee was well sited in the centre of Birdworld and tables covered in ‘Avicultural Society’ green tablecloths. Guests gathered in groups and surged irresistibly towards the wonderful tea prepared by Sylvia Hall and her helpers. Sylvia is well used to catering for these events as she organised the garden parties at Chestnut Lodge for many years.
Plates of sandwiches, cakes and strawberry scones disappeared almost instantaneously until the only thing remaining was a huge green Avicultural Society cake decorated with the magazine logo, a green grackle – made out of icing sugar. This was divided amongst everybody.
A short talk from Duncan Bolton, curator of Birdworld, was followed by the raffle. Finally after thanks and flowers presented to the organisers, at six o’clock, guests said their goodbyes and slowly wandered towards the car park, and home.
